What is Owlboy?

Owlboy is a story-driven platform adventure from Norwegian studio D-Pad Studio, released on PC in November 2016 after nearly a decade in development. You play Otus, a mute owl boy who can fly freely, lift objects, and carry allies who shoot for him while he navigates.

What separates it from other Metroidvanias is the flight: instead of running and jumping, you hover, climb thermals and reposition mid-air, then swap gunners on the fly to match enemy shields. The hand-drawn pixel art and Jonathan Geer's 67-track orchestral score are the two things players mention most, and a free 10th Anniversary Update in November 2026 added auto-aim, the Super Dash and cutscene skipping.

Eight sections cover flight basics, boss order, Buccanary Coin routes, area maps, the twelve achievements, the ending, platforms, and every gunner in the roster.

Owlboy Beginner Guide: Flight Basics

Owlboy never explains its own flight model twice, and the first hour is where most new players stall. This walkthrough covers hover, carry, gunner swapping and the settings you should change before the first dungeon. A straight run is about 8 hours, 10 with side content and 13 for full completion.

1Hold the jump button in mid-air and Otus hovers instead of falling. That hang time, not a dash, is what every early gap and shaft is built around — learn to stop and re-position before you learn to shoot.
2Press the carry button beside an object or ally and Otus lifts it. Carrying Geddy turns Otus into a mobile turret; carrying crates and rocks is how weight puzzles and blocked passages actually get solved.
3You are never locked to one gunner. Geddy's blaster is fast and weak, Alphonse's musket is slow and heavy, Twig's webbing stuns — swap mid-flight to match what the room is asking for, not what you are used to.
4Otus can attack on his own with a spin attack. It handles trash mobs and buys you space, but it leaves stone and steel barriers to Geddy's blaster, so treat it as a panic button rather than a weapon.
5Coins are not a score. Take them to Buccanary's shop and trade them for trinkets — the only permanent upgrades in the game — before the enemies outscale a bare Otus.
6In Options, turn auto-aim on, bind Throw / Shoot / Spin to Z, X and C, and remember that holding roll now fires the Super Dash. All three arrived free in the November 2026 Anniversary Update.

Owlboy Boss Fights in Order

Boss encounters arrive in a fixed sequence and you cannot farm or skip ahead, so knowing what is next is worth more than any stat. This list runs through every named fight from the caves under Vellie to the Tower of the Owls, with the phase count and the gunner that shortens each one.

Turtle GuardianThe first real boss, and the only one the soundtrack splits into two tracks. Two phases that ask you to re-read the arena rather than simply shoot harder — stay airborne and use the hover to reset your angle.
AlphonseThe pirate you fight outside the Owl Temple, and the reason the musket feels familiar later. Beat him and he defects on the spot, becoming Otus's second gunner.
King KaboonThe jungle boss of the Floating Continent. Canopy cover, very little floor, and a fight that punishes drifting — Alphonse's Blast is the cleanest way to close a phase.
Lava GuardianGuardian number two, fought in the Floating Continent's lava caverns. The kill ends with Otus riding its head clear of the arena, which is also your cue that the escape sequence has started.
DirkA straight duel aboard the Pirate Mothership, after the Dreadnought escape. No arena tricks, just a long health bar and short windows — bring burst, not chip damage.
SolusThree phases in the Tower of the Owls, scored across three separate tracks, with the arena changing each time. Keep a gunner in hand and treat the vertical space as the real mechanic.

Owlboy Buccanary Coin Locations

Coins are the only permanent upgrade currency in Owlboy, and they are deliberately placed off the critical path, which is why so many players finish the story under-upgraded. Spend them at Buccanary's shop for trinkets, and sweep each zone before the plot moves you on.

Buccanary's ShopCoins have exactly one use: hand them to Buccanary and she trades them for trinkets. Trinkets are permanent, so there is no reason to hoard — bank them the moment you pass the shop.
Vellie & CavesThe opening zone doubles as the tutorial for vertical coin hunting. Before the story pushes you onward, sweep the cave branches under the village — this is where most under-funded runs begin.
TroposThe first open-ended island, with coin routes hanging above and below the main path and a day and night state. Fly the perimeter before you commit to the temple interior.
Owl TempleTemple coins sit in the vertical shafts between rooms rather than on the main floor. If you can already see the next door, you have not finished the room.
Floating ContinentThe jungle and lava halves both hide coins on optional routes. The lava half is the one players skip, because the escape sequence makes the zone feel timed when it is not.
Totals & GatingTwo achievements track the hunt: Treasure Seeker for starting the collection and Treasure Seeker Grand Master for finishing it. If Grand Master has not popped, you still have coins in a zone you flew through once.

Owlboy Map & Area Routes

Otus moves through a fixed run of zones and the story rarely lets you fly back, so a missed side route is gone until the next playthrough. This module lays the zones out in the order the game opens them, with the detours that are easiest to fly straight past.

VellieThe owl village and the caves beneath it. It plays as the tutorial zone but hides a set of coin branches under the village that most players never return for.
TroposThe first genuinely open island, with routes above and below the main path plus a day and night state. Fly the perimeter before committing to the temple interior.
Owl TempleA vertical zone: coins and collectibles sit in the shafts between rooms rather than on the floor, so 'I can see the next door' is not the same as 'this room is done'.
Floating ContinentTwo halves under one name — jungle canopy and lava caverns. The lava half feels timed because of the escape sequence, but the coin routes stay open until you leave the zone.
Pirate MothershipThe linear stretch after the Dreadnought escape, ending in the Dirk duel. Fewer side routes, but the ones present sit behind doors that close once you move on.
Tower of the OwlsThe final zone and the point of no return. Everything uncollected before this stays uncollected, so treat entering the tower as the end of your sweep.

Owlboy All 12 Steam Achievements

Owlboy ships twelve achievements and half of them are hidden until they unlock, which makes the list look shorter than it is. The six visible ones are all collection-based and can be planned; the hidden six are one-off gags and side interactions you have to know about in advance.

Treasure SeekerCollected Buccanary coins. The first coin milestone, and the one you trip without trying if you explore at all.
Grand MasterTreasure Seeker Grand Master: collected all Buccanary coins. The rarest of the six visible achievements, and the reason most 100% runs stall.
Trinket PairTrinket Master for mastering trinket collection at Buccanary's, and Trinket Grand Master for unlocking every trinket in her shop. Coins alone are not enough — you have to spend them.
Flight of the BoguinCleared the Boguins' Cannon challenge. It sits completely outside the main story, which is why it is the most-missed of the visible six.
Ancient MemoriesCollected the Golden disks, a collectible track separate from the coin economy and easy to walk past mid-dungeon.
The Hidden SixHot Spring Mastery, Good boy, Reminiscing, Music Master, Oops... and Bad boy. All six are flagged hidden on Steam, so their conditions only appear after they pop.

Owlboy Ending Explained

The last hour of Owlboy is scored almost entirely by its soundtrack, and the track titles double as a synopsis of what the ending is doing. This module maps the final run, the Solus fight and the Anti-Hex, then covers what the game deliberately leaves unanswered. Full spoilers throughout.

Tower of the OwlsThe final zone, and the point where the game stops opening new areas. It is entered through 'Ritual Incantation' in the soundtrack, which is also the cue that the endgame has started.
Solus, Three PhasesThe last fight runs three phases, each scored on a separate track, with the arena changing every time. Vertical space and gunner choice matter more than raw damage output.
The Anti-HexThe ritual that closes the story. It follows the Solus fight directly, and it is the moment the game's central curse is answered rather than explained.
The Loop Has EndedThe closing track. The name is the thesis: the cycle the Owls were trapped in is over, and the game states it musically rather than in dialogue.
No EpilogueOwlboy finishes on its final scene instead of a text epilogue, so the state of the islands and the surviving cast is delivered through visuals, not exposition. Expect to rewatch the last scene once.
No Branching EndingsNeither the Steam listing, the official site nor the Nintendo Life review documents alternative endings or a New Game Plus, which is why a single thorough run is the recommended approach.

Owlboy Platforms & Versions

The same game, four releases and six years apart, with one free patch tying them together. This is which platform got what, when each version shipped, and where the ports differ enough to matter.

PCThe original release: Steam on 1 November 2016, also on GOG and Humble. This is the version the Anniversary Update shipped to first.
Nintendo SwitchArrived on 13 February 2018 with the full Japanese voice track, and the port most players now recommend for handheld play.
PS4 & Xbox OneBoth console ports followed together on 10 April 2018. The Xbox One version holds the lowest Metacritic score of the four at 83.
Anniversary UpdatePushed free to Steam, GOG and Humble on 1 November 2026 — a decade after launch. It adds auto-aim, the Super Dash and accessibility toggles rather than new content.
Review ScoresMetacritic sits at 88 on PC and PS4, 87 on Switch and 83 on Xbox One, so the platform choice is about portability and controller, not quality.

Owlboy Gunners & Abilities

Otus never lands a hit himself: every point of damage comes from a friend he is carrying. Four characters can be held as gunners, and their kits overlap far less than they look. Ranked by how often a kit is the only answer to a room, not by damage numbers.

S Tier

Twig. Webbing stuns and slows, and the grapple hook is the only way through waterfalls, wind and the long gaps built around it. Twig is the kit that gates progress rather than damage.

A Tier

Alphonse. A short-range musket with the highest burst in the game and a cooldown to match; it burns vines and bushes, and after the 2026 update his Blast finally lands on Spikeballs and choppers.

B Tier

Geddy. Fast, accurate, low damage and the only gunner who never needs a cooldown. His blaster breaks obstacles the spin attack cannot, and post-update you can throw him into webbed walls.

C Tier

Anne. A one-off escort gunner during the Battle of Advent. Her walking stick is melee, but it pierces armour Alphonse cannot scratch and knocks bombs clear across the screen.
